You've talked it over with your fiancé and you've both decided to write wedding vows for your wedding ceremony.  Now you need to know how to write wedding vows.  Well, it's probably easier than you think.  To help you get started on writing your vows, we've put together a step by step guide to writing wedding vows using your own words.

If you don’t have time to go through this process, see our samples for wedding vows and choose from the vows provided.  If you still want to get started writing wedding vows, read on for our complete guide on how to write wedding vows.

Spend some time thinking about your relationship as a whole

Think back on the time that you’ve spent with your fiancé. Remember the fun times you’ve had together and the challenging times when you were there for each other. What are some of the ways that your fiancé shows he/she loves you?

Think about what made you want to spend the rest of your life with this person and what kind of future experiences you will have together.

Jot down some words and phrases

Once you’ve gone over possible inspirations and you’ve thought about your relationship, write down the words and phrases that come to mind. These can be adjectives, nouns and verbs that can describe your relationship and how you feel about your future spouse. These can also include stories about you and your fiancé.

Now that you have a list of words and phrases, underline or put a star by those that are the most significant to you.

Put it all down on paper

First, imagine yourself as an artist and your wedding vows as your work of art.  Your wedding vows can say whatever you want them to say.  So, the best advice for the actual writing process is to just do it! Often the worst part about writing something is the time up until you write it. Sit down and just start writing, the words may come a lot easier than you think. And, if you still have writers block, remember that there are pre-written vows available on this site.

Remember, the goal isn’t to win a Pulitzer Prize; it is to simply put your feelings into words as accurately as you can.

Listen to your vows

Read over the vows several times out loud to yourself. If they don’t seem to flow or if saying something feels odd to you, make some changes. These words are coming from your heart, so they should sound natural.

Ask a family member or close friend, someone you trust, to listen to your vows. Say them aloud to that person and see their reaction. This will help polish your delivery of the vows and will give you extra confidence in reading them on the big day.
