If you're getting
married in a holy place or by a member of the church (or synagogue,
mosque, etc.), you will need a set of religious vows for your
ceremony. You may also be marrying in this way, but are doing
a nondenominational ceremony. If that's the case, you will
need a copy of nondenominational wedding vows.
These days, it's
perfectly acceptable to use nonreligious vows in your wedding
ceremony if you aren't particularly religious or you have beliefs
that are different from your fiancé.
The
nondenominational vows can be used for ceremonies that aren't
strictly religious as well as a civil ceremony or a mixed religion
ceremony.
To accommodate
all types of ceremonies - religious and nondenominational, below
we
list standard religious vows for a variety of denominations as well
as nondenominational wedding vows. Just choose the vows that
are most applicable to your wedding ceremony. If your wedding
officiate is a member of the church, be sure to discuss the vows
with them to make sure there are no restrictions on what you may
say.
Nondenominational Wedding Vows
Before God our
Father who has given us the gift of love,
I name, join with you, name, in
the covenant of marriage.
I promise to give my faithful, life-giving love to you,
and to share my life with you.
May this community of faith witness our love for each other as long
as we both shall live.
I promise,
name, before family and friends,
to commit my love to
you;
to respect your
individuality;
to be with you
through life's changes,
and to nurture and
strengthen the love between us,
as long as we both
shall live.
Name, I love you.
And I look forward to being your friend
and companion,
your husband/wife and
lover for life.
I promise to love you and respect you;
to stand by you and be faithful to you;
to be open and honest with you;
and to always work toward our mutual
growth.
I promise this with the help of God,
for the good times and the bad times,
till death do us part.
Religious
Wedding Vows
These vows are
only to be said together. They may or may not be repeated after an
officiate. These are typical vows taken from the different religions
listed. It is always a good idea to consult with your officiate
about any restrictions. Some religions are very strict about what
must be said.
Protestant Vows:
In the Name of God, I, name, take you, name,
To be my husband/wife,
To have and to hold from this day forward,
For better for worse,
For richer for poorer,
In sickness and in health,
To love and to cherish,
Until we are parted by death.
This is my solemn vow.
Catholic Vows:
I, name,
take you, name,
To be my lawful
husband/wife,
I promise to be
true to you in good times and in bad,
In sickness and
in health,
I will love you
and honor you all the days of my life.
Hindu Vows:
I, name,
take you, name
Into my heart as
my husband/wife.
Muslim Vows:
I pledge, in
honesty and with sincerity,
To be for you an
obedient and faithful husband/wife.
